The last episode of Guiding Light airs on CBS today. The show, which has been on the air for 72 years, has weathered every change and enhancement in technology over the years. Originally starting on the radio before graduating to television, the legacy is impressive.  The show leaves the air  having won 70 Emmy awards over its broadcast tenure, including Outstanding Drama Series. Many fans will be celebrating the show’s finale with live blogs, Internet chats, and live Twitter feeds.

The show has a great history that has been passed on for generations. “It’s been reflecting American life back at America since before World War II,” said “Guiding Light” executive producer Ellen Wheeler in the Washington Post.

Their replacement is a remake of the popular game show ‘Let’s Make a Deal’  with host Wayne Brady premiering  Oct. 5.  Repeats of “The Price Is Right” will air in their time slot in the mean time.

Guiding Light was created by soap icon Irma Phillips. It debuted on NBC radio in 1937 as a 15-minute serial, then came to CBS television on June 30, 1952. In 1968, “Guiding Light” expanded to 30 minutes and, in 1977, it became a full hour.

The show was the training ground for many of today’s superstars, including Kevin Bacon, JoBeth Williams, James Earl Jones, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Hayden Panettiere and Melina Kanakaredes.

Guiding Light airs its final episode on September 22 on CBS.

Guiding Light ceased production on CBS’ 50 year old soap this week and will air it’s last episode in September. A remake of Let’s Make A Deal will replace the show in CBS’ daytime line up.
This week ABC announced that it is moving production of its legacy drama, All My Children to Los Angeles early next year. The show, which first began airing in 1970, has been produced in New York for over 39 years. Sister soap, One Life To Live will move into the larger space that All My Children currently shares with The View once the show vacates. Both moves are said to be for budgetary reasons.

Guiding Light To Donate Wardrobe To Help New York’s Financially Disadvantaged

(Media Syndicate Press Release)–Guiding Light will be donating a portion of it’s wardrobe to help financially disadvantaged New York City women. The Emmy winning show, which ends it’s 72 year run in September, will provide Bottomless Closet with the woman’s business clothing, jewelry and accessories worn on the show.

guiding_light_04x3

“Since we film in New York City, it seemed fitting to donate the clothes to Bottomless Closet and help women in our community to improve their lives,” stated Shawn Reeves, Guiding Light’s Costume Designer. “ High unemployment rates make it more crucial than ever for women to have the right outfits for job interviews and to remain competitive in the workplace.”

Guiding Light’s donation will become part of Bottomless Closet’s ‘boutique’ at the organization’s headquarters in the Hotel Pennsylvania. Women who are referred to Bottomless Closet receive two complete outfits prior to going on a scheduled job interview and can return for three more outfits once they find employment.

“We greatly appreciate Guiding Light’s generous donation, which will support our efforts to provide women with business attire so they can interview with confidence and enhance their self esteem,” said Kendall Farrell, Bottomless Closet’s Executive Director. “Our clients will have interview outfits literally fit for a leading lady.”

“Let’s Make A Deal” Revisited?

Wayne-Brady-710076Let's Make a Deal, one of the most popular television game shows
of the 1960’s and 70’s is back with new host Wayne Brady!
A pilot for the new revived show will be taped at CBS this week.
The format for the new show seems to be the same as it was
when the show first aired.
Just before taping, contestants will be randomly selected from
the studio audience for a chance to win! Contestants will be
given the choice to play for a certain prize or trade it in for
one that's hidden behind a curtain or door. The risk is either
getting a fantastic prize like a First-Class Trip to Hawaii
or a "dud" prize.
The "dud" prize reveal is usually a stunt like Wayne Brady
dressed as an old granny in a giant rocking chair?
The decision-making is exciting and suspenseful and
the audience is always in on the fun. And everyone wears costumes!
The more creative or outrageous costumes are picked for contestants.
Whether the pilot will be picked up by CBS or another network is
not known. The game shows taping fuels speculation that CBS
will be replacing long running soap opera Guiding Light, which ends in September, with a more
budget-friendly game show in it's time slot.
