American baritone who was the first to perform the role of Porgy in George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, was the first black to sing with the New York City Opera, and was a noted teacher and recitalist; he presented some 2,000 recitals in 56 countries during his 25-year career (b. Feb. 12, 1903, Danville, Ky.–d. Feb. 28, 1998, Washington, D.C.).
